The Final Stretch at FAST

It only seems yesterday when you wake up, pack up your bag and come to university for your first day of the semester. First forward twelve weeks and the final week of the semester starts. Soon you forget all the good times and all the bad times of the semester only this week matters.
Undoubtedly, the biggest feature of the final weeks is the mysterious feeling of joy and fear. Joy that the semester is about to finish and the fear that the finals are about to start. Additionally, the final week is combination of deadlines. There are projects to submit, reports to finish and presentations to give. The classes slowly finish but the workload only increases since revision for the finals start. The library gets filled and there is no space in the computer lab. Everyone wants to give their best and perform well.

It is during this week that you realize the caliber of this university. For some the pressure is too much and they can’t take it anymore.

In my opinion it’s the best week of the semester.

Make time for Creative Thinking at FAST

Every textbook on creativity affirms to the importance of setting aside clearly defined time for creative thinking and innovation. For example, Google asks its teams to allocate at least 20% of their time to creative thinking or new projects.  But often, even if we show up ready to innovate, still something doesn’t work and fresh ideas fail to pop up like popcorn. There are two reasons for this stalemate. The first is that we don’t practice dreaming, and the second is we don’t practice focusing on cohesive ideas.

Therefore, the next rule of creative thinking is very simple: allocate time – it   might be an hour per day or per week – in which to exercise creative thinking       about something specific. A teacher told me that when he was a student many years ago he started musing about mobile phones – what they would be in 10 and 20 years’ time.

Dealing with Three Major Study Problems at FAST

Procrastination

Procrastination feeds on itself. The trick is to get started quickly. If necessary, fool yourself. Plan to work for just a few minutes, then get back to procrastination. Try thumbing through the chapter to build interest, before really studying, or read the introduction. Generate exam-type questions with classmates. Use a schedule. Work for short periods. Think positive.

Concentration

Reduce or remove external distractions. Use paper and pencil to transfer internal distractions to a list. Try talking about the subject with yourself. Or try imagining the author or teacher sitting with you. Ask them questions. What is most important? Why? Let the book answer the questions. Study with others or see a tutor.

Boredom

Plan to work shorter periods. Switch subject matter more often. Try to develop interest by using a pencil and scratch paper to sketch the 3 most important ideas. Vocalize, visualize and symbolize to engage ail of your brain. Study with others or see a tutor. Ask the teacher why the subject is important.

Eating-Disorders at FAST

Many of FAST students – both women and men – develop eating disorders during their University years, and a vast majority does not seek help or don’t realize the extent of their issues.
Eating disorders areNational Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD):extreme behaviors, emotions and attitudes that revolve around food and weight issues. These disorders cause serious mental and physical problems that can result in life-threatening issues when left untreated. According to statistics provided by the
  • People ages 12-25 represent 95% of those with eating disorders
  • Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness in adolescents
  • 91% of University women attempt to control their weight through dieting
  • 25% of University women binge and purge to manage their weight
Though the numbers do not often reflect the number of males who suffer from eating disorders, they are nearly as likely to develop a disorder as women. Due to cultural views of eating disorders, however, they don’t often seek treatment; bulimia and anorexia are seen as women’s issues.

Are You Depressed at FAST?

It’s important to understand your own susceptibility to depression. Knowing how you handle stress, feelings of isolation, homesickness and heartbreak may help you realize when you’re becoming depressed. For many who are already depressed, however, it’s difficult to look inward. Depression can be a cycle of dark thoughts and feeling worthless, and soul searching or self-awareness may not always be possible, but it is important that you try.
Ask yourself the following:
  • Have you experienced extreme sadness or hopelessness?
  • Does your family have a history of depression?
  • Have you turned to heavy drinking or drug use to relieve feelings of hopelessness?
  • Have you been experiencing thoughts of death or suicide?
If you answered yes to any of the above, you may want to contact your primary healthcare provider or your student health center for a mental health assessment. If you feel comfortable speaking with a friend or relative about your concerns, have someone help you research treatment options and accompany you to your campus health center.

Need of Sports at FAST

What we usually hear is that a healthy body breeds a healthy mind. Considering this a university student needs the healthiest body of them all, and the key to this is sports. Some Universities pay special attention in this matter while others take sports for granted making studies their primary focus. Such universities have a goal to make students hollow with their students having outstanding GPA but no exposure to the outside world.

A study, by the University of Kansas,  shows high school athletes perform better in school, persist to graduation more than non-athletes. So if not the primary focus, Sports should be a major focus of the Universities as it will not only help the student but also the universities in attracting more pupil.

Why Smokers at FAST

Majority of the chain smokers start smoking while they are in college or universities, and are unable to give it up later in life. There are several reasons for this. The primary being the burden of studies. In universities there is a lot of burden on the students on the students regarding their studies. As a result they turn to smoking as it helps to release this tension for a short while.

Other reason include peer pressure. In a group if majority of the pupil are smokers they somehow force the rest of them to do the same. Also some see themselves as somewhat less than the smokers so they start smoking. It is also seen that some teenagers start smoking out of curiosity. They are curious to know how it feels and sometimes hang on to it.

Is it FAST or NUCES

When I was seeking admission in NUCES at Lahore campus, I was very confused regarding the abbreviations of FAST and NUCES. The question sequentially knocked the invisible doors of my head.I tried my best to ignore this question but it still occupied some corner of my mind.

It was the day of welcome ceremony for new comers when the question rose again. The welcome board hanging on the front door of Computer Science (CS) department answered my question. It was stated on reflecting steel board with bold golden words that “National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NUCES), a project of Foundation for Advancement of Science and Technology (FAST)”.Under it there was a transparent glass plate. It was stated on it that “The Foundation for Advancement of Science and Technology (FAST) was founded and established by BCCI financier Hasan Abidi that provided a large financial capital for university's purpose to promote research in computer sciences and emerging technologies in 1980. FAST later established National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences in 2000.”

Societies at FAST

Numerous number of societies are working in all campuses of FAST-NU to promote professional skills and to provide teamwork experience. Among all the prominent ones are ACM, IEEE, Sportics and ASCE. First, ACM-NUCES student chapter has a rich legacy of organizing and hosting international, national and local competitions in the fields of software project, software quiz, programming and gaming. In doing so, it has received participants from most countries in the region, and from all major educational institutions in Pakistan.

The successful holding and completion of these events has only added to the growing fame of NUCES-ACM as being the premier ACM Chapter in the country. Second, IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities.

Furthermore, Sportics is one of the most popular and energetic societies in FAST. It organizes sport events which include indoor games like Chess, Checkers and Table Tennis and outdoor games like Throw ball, Volleyball, cricket and Basketball. Sportics has the credit of hosting the first ever inter-university tournament for throw ball, volley ball, foot ball and cricket at FAST under the title of  Unilympics. Sportics has the mission to keep the sports-man spirit alive in all the FASTian geeks! Finally, ASCE-NUCES is the student chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers( ASCE ) in Pakistan at FAST NUCES Lahore. The aim of this chapter is to make students aware of the developments in the field of engineering, specifically civil engineering, around the globe, to provide them with a platform for grooming and growth and one through which they may communicate and learn from their foreign counterparts. It conclude that the societies at FAST are working well for the development and awareness of IT among students to increase their appetite of technology.

Sports at FAST

Fast (N.U.C.E.S) is one of the universities which does not pay much attention to sports and other co-curricular activities. There are no proper facilities for the sportsmen of the Universities. The cricket pitch is within the football ground, the tennis court is not properly maintained so is the basketball court.

The University has only a single game room which has only two table tennis tables for all the students. The badminton court is also outdoor, which is a major problem because the weather is mostly windy and it hinders the play. So all in all it can be seen that fast is not a university which likes to spend much on its sports facilities and is one of its major drawback.

By: Hassan Arshad

The-Sports-Challenge at FAST

Fast Sports challenge was a sports event hosted by the Fast Sports Society at the Lahore campus of the university. The event had several sports event, both indoor and outdoor as well as gaming. Even though it is the only sports event the university organizes, it wasn't up to the standards of the university.

The university as we know, is very strict about the timings and wants the pupil to be punctual but the event was the total opposite. Almost no part of the sports challenge was on time, even the 'Qawali Night' did not start on time. Moreover this was met with poor refereeing decisions in most of the games. The badminton matches were also held inside a tent to give an "indoor" environment. So on the whole it can be said that the Fast Sports Challenge did not meet the hype it had created and was a disappointment for the participants.

SOFTEC at FAST

SOFTEC is a two-day event organized every year at the Lahore campus of NUCES since 1998. Softec 2017 lead by Mr. Humbl Imran as President is considered as the Best Edition due to its top-notch management, designs and many other things. SOFTEC is the yearly flagship event of FAST-NUCES Lahore.

This year I participated in it and got a chance to have a close eye on SOFTEC. There were competitions in eight fields. These competitions were held under the names of Software Competition, Bilal Hashmi Programming Contest, Engineering Project Competition, Web and App Development Competition, Gaming Competitions, Ideas Xtreme (Where students from Grade School display their ideas), Robo Rumble, and Electronics Engineering Competition. There were participants from all over Pakistan and FAST students themselves. Companies also participate ranging from software houses to career counseling firm to engineering giants. Scholars as well as professionals from various fields attended SOFTEC as guests, observers and judges to witness the proficiency of the students.

Types of FASTians

In every class, there are a variety of types of students. From nerds to backbenchers and Mr. Know-it-all to teach-me-if-you-can, this range adds to the beauty of the time you spend in a school, college or university. But even though they are fun, sometimes the classmates in your life are overly annoying, especially when it comes to exam season. There are three main types of students at FAST University as toppers, know-nothing and what-you-know students. First, there are the toppers.

As the name suggests, these are the ones who always top the class. Right from the first class until the last one, they will make sure the teacher notices them. They will never miss a class, and always try to grab the front benches. Where a first-come first-served rule applies, they will be there half an hour before the class starts. Some of them will even laugh at the boring jokes of the teacher. Second, there comes the know-nothing students.

These types of students are pretty cool people. They will never ever be serious during the semester. You will see them occasionally attending class, if they have nothing better to do. But even when they do bless the rest of us with their presence, they are hardly paying attention to what the teachers are saying. Third, there comes the what-you-know students.

These are funny people. They generally consider themselves competitors of the toppers, but they never beat them. And once the exam results are out, they always curse the toppers, saying they don’t have anything fun in their life. But secretly, they harbor wishes of being a topper. During exam season, they will pretend they know nothing and keep asking others what they know. In some ways, they try to ascertain the level of competition they are facing.

To conclude, a class has different kinds of students on the basis of study and irrespective of their culture and region. These all kind of students have their own value. They are a permanent source of every aspect as study, help, fun and enjoyment.

My First Day at FAST

The 16th of august, 2016 was the day that helped me to overcome one of my greatest fears. This was my first day at one of the most prestigious universities in Pakistan and nothing was familiar. I had just entered the doors of FAST University and started my life-changing journey.
I was trying to find the lecture room, but eventually I got lost in the labyrinth of the majestic building. I was embarrassed and many questions were running in my head. Where was my class? Where was the professor’s room? How should I behave with new classmates? However, all this questions were minor in comparison with my main fear. I began to panic.
From my earliest childhood, I was introvert. Therefore, I was afraid of talking to new people because I might look foolish and embarrass myself or just because I thought that, I could do everything by myself. In addition, by reason of nervousness I could start to stammer. Anyway, I had to find someone to help me because I could not be late for the first lesson!

Scraps of foreign speech were traveling from the room at the end of long corridor. Gathering courage, I decided to enter that room and ask for the help. Fortunately, a passing manager asked me if I have problems and kindly offered to accompany me to the classroom.
In a minute, we took a lift and I was on the threshold of the auditorium. To make a step forward was the most difficult action because the noisy classroom was full of new faces. Almost all places were occupied and I sat at the end of the row. In 5 minutes, the calculus professor Hina Firdous came and silence reigned. Subject was not simple, but that was just a starter. I faced some difficulties related to educational process, but my classmates were very kind and were ready to help me at any time. Thereby I made new acquaintances. By the end of the day, I had learnt a lesson.
After the first day at FAST University, I understood that all problems can/could be solved much faster and easier, when you have a supporter. People around us not angry and always willing to help, just forget about your fears and make step forward to them!.

Study in Library of FAST

Are you a student at FAST and searching some peaceful corner? Then there is only one place for you, that place is library. Full name of it is JUSTICE GUL MUHAMMAD LIBRARY. It is most relaxing and peaceful corner of National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences. Usually it is crowded with people but everyone tries to be silent. When I have to do some assignment or to prepare for mids and final, then the place, which comes first in my mind, is library.

All books related to our course are available there. I spend my time reading some non-academic books from shelf labelled as new arrival. The dark brown furniture in light colored library gives quite professional look. Although the library is available online, but I like to read books with light tone music ringing in my ear. If you do not make noise then there is no one who could ask you to leave the room or interrupt you during your work. Therefore, I say that the library is best place for knowledge seekers like me.

Library Standards of FAST

An academic library plays a significant role in the context of new learning paradigm. According to this understanding of learning, FAST University library as a subsystem of university organization has not been a division only providing services for studies and research any longer. Instead, it has become an important unit of university's information infrastructure and an active participant in the learning process of the particular study program. It is an integral part of university's educational system. Together with the university departments and teaching staff, this library strives to realize the study aims.

The library has become one of the potential learning environments that functions at the university. It is characterized by the abundance of information sources. It has  interacted with all the educational environments of academic study programs. Its regular clients (students, teachers, researchers, administration staff) interact with each other. It is a condition of entry into the Library that library staff may inspect all bags or other receptacles capable of containing library materials and their contents. If a person refuses such inspection of their bags or other receptacles, they may be refused entry or asked to leave the Library.

Lab No 6 at FAST

Are you freshmen at FAST? If the answer was yes then you would agree with me that the lab number six is a torture room for FASTians. Lab number six is a programing lab. It is the second name of horror for freshies. First, the situation of three busy hours of lab is like the tug of war. Programmers try their best to win the battlefield by writing codes.

However, the lab is usually designed in such a way that the average student cannot complete it in three hours. Another reason is that lab instructors make more advanced labs with tough logics. A research conducted by HEC revealed that the lab six of FAS-NU prepares programmers of international standards. Overall, the labs are very tough and mind knocking but these tough labs seem to be a blessing when he/she graduates from FAST and receives thumb up in industry for quality of his work.

Hostel Life of a FASTian.

University usually requires moving to a different town, city or state. Many first-year student at FAST University find themselves in an unfamiliar environment that take getting used to. Students will need to adapt to living in a dorm room, to cook for oneself, to save money and deal with a daily commute. This is the first true transition into adulthood, when you are in a position where the student can no longer depend on parents, siblings and friends.

Undoubtedly, the life in a hostel is different from that of the home. First of all, the greatest blessing of hostel life is independence. AS you may sleep whenever you like. You may get up late in the morning but none will question you. Secondly, apart from the general rules and regulations, which are to be followed necessarily by everyone, one is his own master. It is due to this reason that many students do not like to go home even in long vacations. Those who love freedom love the hostel life.

In contrast, hostel life with its so many advantages has some drawbacks also. Students coming for the first time to a hostel, find entirely new atmosphere. The freedom of the hostel leads them astray. They fail to choose good companions. The unlimited freedom proves harmful for such students.

It is clear that much of the usefulness, as well as harmlessness of hostel life depends upon its management. A badly managed hostel is bound to spoil the lives of its inmates. A well-managed hostel is sure to prove a blessing for those who are lucky enough to live in it.

Career Opportunities at FAST

A survey of IT industry, conducted by PLDAT, clearly states that fifty two percent of IT sector in Pakistan is occupied by FAST graduates. Despite the fact that there is no institutional struggle for entrepreneurship, the success of FASTins is due to the career opportunities provided by FAST. First, FAST Alumni provides support for their university mates. They know the difficulties and depression faced by juniors, therefore, they prefer FASTins instead of other universities’ graduates. FAST Alumni with graduates from all academic programs forms an integral part of the university. This ever-growing body represents a rich resource base for the university with its huge reservoir of diverse talents and expertise spanning over areas like management, engineering, information technology, economics and social sciences.

Second, some events are specially arranged for the recruitment of final year students in different companies. SOFTEC is the best example of it. Although its main purpose is to motivate computer science (CS) studies, but many companies and software houses come and hire some graduates. Among these companies the leading ones include google, Netsole, coca-cola and venture drive etc. Although FAST provides many job opportunities, but entrepreneurship is almost pointing to zero. Administration is not focusing on strategies to promote entrepreneurship among students. They are just training them as machines, who do very well at programing but hesitate to innovate new ideas. Concluding the whole discussion, FAST is performing well for IT industry but it needs hard work for promotion of entrepreneurship.

Drug-Abuse at FAST

High.. High. Who is high? We all are high. We all fly. Fly where?
Everywhere.
These days a new trend is found most commonly among the youth and the young energetic blood of our generation. How are they high? What are they high on? Not in their grades, not in their academic performances, not in their extracurricular activities. JUST DRUGS.

Drug addiction is commonly found in the young blood and they consume drugs on different levels every day. This social stigma further ignites when the drug consumption is seen as the 'party instrument' and parties are celebrated by consuming drugs. Any party at youth level without drugs is not considered a party and according to several surveys drugs are found relaxing for the students. Due to high academic pressures, many Fastians consume drugs to release stress. As a result the society becomes corrupt and immoral. This needs to be stopped as soon as possible as the poison is boosting everyday and might just kill the generation's integrity one day.

Computer Labs of FAST

The university has well-equipped labs that help students grasp the hands-on practice for the theory that they learn. Although it is a modern life and the price of most mobile devices is fairly low, but not all students have the financial resources to buy the latest-and-greatest gadgets. Some students still come to campus with older computers that don’t have the processing power or graphics cards necessary to run newer applications. Others can afford only low-end computers or invest instead in smartphones or tablets. Students in technical fields of study, such as Computer Science, mathematics, engineering, architecture and finance, may not be able to afford the specialized applications that their classes require them to use. These students will need access to computer labs for certain core functions (such as printing), so computers will need to provide them. That is why, academic departments of FAST University have managed almost 12 computer labs that are fully equipped with computers and allows all the students to get access to these computers.

All Computers are fully functional with every kind of programs and software installed in it. All labs are air conditioned and relax able and provides a satisfactory environment for study and research.  Many students like to hang out in computer labs, sometimes for social or collaborative purposes and sometimes because they simply want to work on computers that have more, better or different features than their own.

Administration in FAST

Being a Fastian and a freshman one does not have much encounters with the administration of the university, but on the other hand the very few interactions reveal much about it.
As freshman, we got to hear, from our seniors, that fast has a poor administration. Over the year we realize that it is indeed true.
The stature of the administration is such that there is not one or two date sheets for the exams but over four to five version.
Similar is the case with time tables.

Moreover any exam can be cancelled without any notice, irrespective of the wastage of students’ time and hard work.

Many a time classes are also dismissed in a similar fashion.

So, despite of being one of the most renowned university of Pakistan, it is very sad to say that indeed FAST has a very poor administration.

Achievements of FAST

The National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NUCES) is a private research university in Pakistan. It has multiple campuses based in cosmopolitan cities of Pakistan and has distinction of being the first multi-campus university in Pakistan. It is consistently ranked among one of the leading and top institutions of higher learning in the country, securing its top rank in the computer sciences/IT category by the HEC in 2010.

The biggest achievement of FAST-NU is the vast network of its graduates in IT industry across the globe. Name any IT sector organization across the globe, we will find the graduates of FAST working there, even some FASTians are working for Google, Microsoft and Facebook. During the last decade, FAST has produced large number of entrepreneurs by supporting them financially and technically. My first cousin is the best example who graduated from FAST Lahore campus. He was offered job from a well repute multinational IT enterprise. Moreover, he is living a successful life.

First year problems at FAST

Many first year Fastians faces a lot of problems in university. Many first year FAST university students find themselves away from home for the first time in their lives, and being responsible for their own health, wealth and happiness. It is here that the young, and usually unprepared young person must address problems that inevitably arise from becoming a full-fledged adult.
In addition, the problem that is faced by the first-year student at FAST is finding the time to study. The subjects taught in four-years at FAST University require far more involvement than those in colleges and the student must address their academic priorities.

Moreover, the student should also be careful about who they associate with. FAST university has groups of over-competitive students, who will do whatever it takes to get ahead. You may find yourself in bad situations because of people who have no problem being dishonest or hurting you for their own gain, so always be on the lookout for selfish behavior.
At last, forging personal, friendly and business relationships while in FAST University are also a very important of the university experience. If you're in a friendly relationship while going into university, this relationship will be tested with temptations and busy schedules. Long-time friends can often lose touch by going to college in different cities. FAST University gives you a new perspective and you will grow to care about your loved ones much more.

The Final Stretch at FAST

It only seems yesterday when you wake up, pack up your bag and come to university for your first day of the semester. First forward twelve ...
